[edit]Compound of 鬣 (tategami, “standing hair” → “mane”) + 犬 (inu, “dog”).[1] Compare Chinese 鬣狗 (liègǒu).

[edit]This term is rarely used anymore, having been replaced by ハイエナ (haiena) borrowed from English.
