Etymology
[edit]May be a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived components, as a compound of 距 (kyo, “to be away from”) + 離 (ri, “separation”).
First cited in the 和蘭字彙 (Oranda Jii, “Dutch Dictionary”), published in two parts in 1855 and 1858.[1]
