Oracle bone script: Pictogram (象形) – a person () with dots above and below the arms, depicting will o' the wisp around a human body.

In the bronze script, feet () were added to the bottom. In the small seal script, is graphically detached from the corpse with the dots, which corrupts into the unrelated ; Shuowen erroneously interprets it as an ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (fire; flame) + (feet). In the regular script, the top further corrupts into the unrelated .
