Glyph origin
[edit]Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) : semantic 气 (“gas”) + phonetic 彔. 彔 is also a reduced form of 綠 (“green”), serving as a semantic component.
Etymology
[edit]From 綠氣/绿气 (“green gas”) in the 19th century, which is a calque of English chlorine, referring to the colour of chlorine gas.
