Etymology

[edit]

Calque of English brokeback; from the title of Taiwanese director Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain which featured a homosexual pair.

Since the movie's release, its Chinese name 斷背山 and this word 斷背 has constantly been also rendered as 斷臂山 and 斷臂断臂 (duànbì) in the internet.

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Is this due to the dialectal homophony of 背 and 臂? If so, in which dialects are they homophonic?”)
