Usage in the Philippines refers specifically to the old Landing Certificate of Residence document that Chinese migrants were required to have during the American Colonial Era and Commonwealth Period in the Philippines as required by the Chinese Exclusion Act of the United States applied to the Philippine Islands from 1902-1943 as part of the United States. Chinese Filipino families tracing back to this era use this term to refer to this heirloom document.
