Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The formation is similar to ὀσφῦς (osphûs), δελφύς (delphús) and νηδύς (nēdús). Etymological relation with Latin īlia (“side of the body”) is improbable. Furnée proposed to connect ἰσχίον (iskhíon, “hip”); if correct, the word is Pre-Greek because of the variation.
