Luce gives Old Chinese (OC *sreːl, *srel, *sri, “sieve; to strain”) as a cognate.[1] Though the Old Chinese reconstruction isn't particularly close, it does bear some resemblance to that of (OC *ʔsreːŋ), which is thought to be cognate with the sense in Etymology 1 based on the comparative method.”

Particularly: “This is a "wastebasket" where MED got lazy and didn't assign any of these into their respective etymologies. Most, if not all of these, probably derive from the "strain, sift" sense of Etymology 2.”
