From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnakʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nogʰ- (nail). Cognate with Persian ناخن (nâxon), Central Kurdish نینۆک (nînok), Ancient Greek ὄνυξ (ónux), Latin unguis, Old Armenian եղունգն (ełungn), English nail.
