Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *daywiH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywiH, from Proto-Indo-European *déywih₂ (“goddess”). Equivalent to देव (deva) + -ई (-ī). Cognate with Lithuanian deivė, Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬉𐬎𐬎𐬍 (daēuuī, “female Daeva”).
