Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Noun of place of the verb اِسْتَشْفَى (istašfā, “to seek a cure”) from the root ش ف ي (š-f-y); literally “place for seeking a cure”, arising in the end of the 19th century at first as a euphemism, displacing the medieval مَارِسْتَان (māristān) that is now if not used historically rather a word for an insane asylum.
