Possibly a doublet of خواجه (hoca, “teacher, master”), from Persian خواجه (xâje, “lord, master, owner”). Cognate with Bashkir хужа (xuja, “master, owner”), Kazakh қожа (qoja, “host, owner”), Kyrgyz кожо (kojo, “host, owner”), Tatar хуҗа (xuca, “host, owner”), Uyghur خوجا (xoja, “host, owner”) and Uzbek xoʻja (“host, owner”).
