From Proto-Semitic, related to the root ص ف ح (ṣ-f-ḥ). Akin to Ge'ez ጻሕል (ṣaḥl, bowl, jar, pan), Hebrew צֵלָחָת (ṣelāḥāṯ, pot), Hebrew צַלַּחַת (ṣallaḥáṯ, dish, bowl), Aramaic צְלֹוחִיתָא / ܨܠ݀ܿܘܚܺܝܬܐ (ṣlōẖīṯā, jar).
