From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlwh /⁠āluh⁠/, eagle) (Manichaean Middle Persian [Manichaean needed] (ʾʾlwf /⁠āluf⁠/)). Compare Gilaki الوغ (aluğ), Mazanderani اله (alle), Northern Kurdish eylo / êlo, Central Kurdish ھەڵۆ (hello) and Bakhtiari آلو (âlō), as well as արծուի (arcui).

From Proto-Iranian *Hr̥jifyáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥ȷ́ipyás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂rǵ-i-pt-ió-s, from *h₂erǵ- (white, glittering). Cognate with Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬟𐬌𐬌𐬀 (ərəzifiia).
