Some propose a derivation from Akkadian 𒂊𒁲𒉡 (edinu, “desert, steppe”), itself a loan from Sumerian 𒂔 (eden, “plain, open country”). Alternately, a derivation from the same Proto-Semitic root as dialectical Arabic عَدَّان (ʕiddān or ʕaddān), having the meaning "biding place"/"place of remaining", "an abode".
