From Proto-Turkic *yạyŋak. Cognate with Kazakh жақ (jaq), Kyrgyz жаак (jaak, jaw), Crimean Tatar yanaq, Karachay-Balkar жыякъ (jıyaq), Kumyk яякъ (yayaq), Bashkir яңаҡ (yañaq), Tatar яңак (yañaq), Azerbaijani yanaq, Turkish yanak, Turkmen ýaňak, Shor наақ, Western Yugur yïnaq/ yinaq, etc.
