[edit]Continues Old Church Slavonic соуръ (surŭ), probably of Oghur or Kipchak (Cuman) origin cognate with Kazakh сұр (sūr, “gray”) (possibly from Proto-Turkic *sǖr- (“to vade away”)) or from an o-grade of Proto-Slavic *syrъ (“raw, damp”).
