χαλάω
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]According to Beekes, of unknown or Pre-Greek origin, and unrelated to Armenian խաղ (xaġ, “game, pastime”) (a connection would require a Proto-Indo-European *kʰ, which is unheard of for inherited words).[1] Also sometimes compared to Sanskrit खल्लते (khallate, “he/she/it is being loosened”).
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /kʰa.lá.ɔː/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /kʰaˈla.o/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /xaˈla.o/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /xaˈla.o/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /xaˈla.o/
Verb
[edit]χαλάω • (khaláō)
- (transitive) to slacken; to loosen
- Antonym: σφῐ́γγω (sphíngō)
- (intransitive) to become slack; to become loose
- to open, be open
