στρογγύλος
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin.
According to Frisk, an adjectival formation from the o-grade of στράγξ (stránx, “trickle, drop”) (as drops tend to be rounded), and/or with morphological influence from γογγῠ́λος (gongúlos, “round, spherical”).
However, Beekes is skeptical of the semantic link to στράγξ (stránx), and in light of the suffix -υλ- (-ul-) also found in κᾰμπῠ́λος (kampúlos, “bent, curved”) and ἀγκύλος (ankúlos, “crooked, curved”), suggests a Pre-Greek origin for the word (with or without στράγξ (stránx)).[1] Though this is possible, it is worth noting that the root of ἀγκύλος (ankúlos) is derived by Beekes himself from Proto-Indo-European, implying that the suffix, rather than the roots of the words, is from a substrate.
