[edit]From Proto-Iranian *xšápš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšáps, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷséps (“night”). Cognate with Persian شب (šab), Sanskrit क्षप् (kṣap), Avestan 𐬑𐬴𐬀𐬞 (xṣ̌ap), Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐎱 (x-š-p).
