[edit]From Middle High German echzen, achzen, echezen, achezen (“to say, groan, lament”), from Old High German *ahhizen, *ahhizzen (“to say ‘ah’”), attested in the verbal noun ahhizōt, derived from the interjection ah (“oh; ah; my; alas”), whence modern ach (idem).
