Inherited from Latin sugo. Cognate with Galician zugar, Catalan xuclar, French sucer and Portuguese sugar.

From Arabic سُكَّر (sukkar) (probably borrowed via one or multiple Italo-Romance languages), from Persian شکر (šakar), from Middle Persian škl (/⁠šakar⁠/), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śarkarā). Compare Venetan sùcaro, Istriot soûcaro, Italian zucchero, Romansch zutger, French sucre.
