Romanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From older vied̦ure, possibly from Late Proto-Albanian *vedzula, a deverbative of Proto-Albanian *wedza (to steal). The declension signals that the etymon is likely to have contained the Proto-Albanian diminutive suffix *-ula with the final vowel preserved. Romanian mazăre (pies) certainly resulted in the third declension due to the likely diminutive suffix of its root. Also, sâmbure (pit of a fruit) would transport the diminutive suffix into the third declension if it originates from Proto-Albanian. It can't be derived from earlier Albanian with the final [a] already having turned into [ə] as this is continued by the same vowel in Romanian just like in daltă (chisel), only probable from daltë (chisel). Cognate to Gheg Albanian vjedhullë (compare standard vjedull) from the same source.[1][2]
