Etymology

[edit]

From Gascon agost, from Old Occitan agost, from Vulgar Latin agustus, from Latin augustus. The semantic shift “August > month of the harvest > harvest” is straightforward, but the relexicalization from “August / harvest” to “July” is more obscure.
