split-tail (plural split-tails)

  1. A California fish (Pogonichthys macrolepidotus) of the carp family.
  2. The pintail duck.
  3. (US, military, slang, possibly offensive) A woman.
    • 1992, United States Naval Institute Proceedings, volume 118, page 23:
I have encountered officers who believe a woman got a better assignment or somehow "got over" because of her sex. It's a shock to their egos that some "split-tail"—yes, I've had that original thrown my way—could possibly be more talented.
