[edit]From Old Norse steypa (“to cast, pour”), from Proto-Germanic *staupijaną (“to tumble, plunge”), cognate with Norwegian støype, Swedish stöpa (English steep is borrowed from Old Norse). The Germanic verb is related to the adjective *staupaz (“steep”) and the verb *stūpijaną, *stūpēną (“to stand out”).
