Formed on analogy with other fossilised z-stem plurals (e.g. Old English hæteru (clothing), Old English sċerero/sċeruro (scissors), etc.); perhaps hearkening back to a Proto-West Germanic *stainiʀu. Equivalent to stān +‎ -ru.
