From Proto-Oceanic *pulu (coconut husk) (compare with Fijian bulu and Hawaiian pulu "coconut husk")[1][2] from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bulut.[3] Sense of "plug" is a semantic extension from the lack of coconuts found naturally in New Zealand.[2]
