lende
Albanian
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- lend m — dialectal, earlier form
- len, land — Gheg
- lënde, lëndë — Tosk
- linde — Gjirokastër
- lëndre — Arvanitika
- vlendë — dialectal
Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. The original form was likely lend m and lende arose as a back-formation from its plural. The variant with vl- is almost certainly secondary.
- Akin to other Indo-European terms for “lentil”, such as Latin lēns, lentis, Lithuanian lę̃šis, German Linse, though the ultimate origin is unclear.[1][2]
- Borrowed from Vulgar Latin glāns, glandis (“acorn”), whence actually gjëndër (“gland”),[3][4] although the initial l- would be left unexplained.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]lende f (plural lende, definite lendja, definite plural lendet)
