Alternative forms

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. The original form was likely lend m and lende arose as a back-formation from its plural. The variant with vl- is almost certainly secondary.

  1. Akin to other Indo-European terms for lentil, such as Latin lēns, lentis, Lithuanian lę̃šis, German Linse, though the ultimate origin is unclear.[1][2]
  2. Borrowed from Vulgar Latin glāns, glandis (acorn), whence actually gjëndër (gland),[3][4] although the initial l- would be left unexplained.

lende f (plural lende, definite lendja, definite plural lendet)
