From Proto-Malayic *laban, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *laban (oppose, go against someone). Cognate with Tagalog laban and Javanese lawan.

Attested in the Kota Kapur inscription, 686 AD, as Old Malay [script needed] (lavan).
