[edit]Borrowed from Omani Arabic لابد (lābid, “perhaps”), from Arabic لَا بُدَّ (lā budda, “it is absolutely necessary”). Given the frequent use of this phrase, the meaning was gradually weakened; compare Persian لابد (lâbod, “probably”).
