Etymology

[edit]

kerros (storey) +‎ talo (house)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈkerːosˌtɑlo/, [ˈk̟e̞rːo̞s̠ˌtɑ̝lo̞]
  • Rhymes: -ɑlo
  • Hyphenation(key): kerros‧talo

Noun

[edit]

kerrostalo

  1. (multistorey) apartment building/block of flats
    Synonym: asuinkerrostalo
    Coordinate term: pientalo
  2. (broadly) multistorey building

Usage notes

[edit]

In general, a residential building is a kerrostalo if the flats/apartments within it are located on top of one another, even partially, and especially if all of them are not necessarily accessible directly from the ground level; in other cases, the residential building counts as a pientalo (according to its broad definition).
