[edit]From Middle Dutch kemmen, from Old Dutch *kemben, from Proto-West Germanic *kambijan, from Proto-Germanic *kambijaną, from *kambaz (“comb”). Still used up to the 17th century, but replaced by kammen, which was re-formed from the noun.
