Etymology

[edit]

Attested at least since 1791. A Balkan wanderword of unknown origin, perhaps from Ukrainian кукуру́дза (kukurúdza), Serbo-Croatian kukuruz, or Ottoman Turkish قوقوروز. The penultimate vowel in the modern form is likely due to paronymic attraction to the common suffix -yca. Compare Czech kukuřice.
