From Old Norse kœfa, whence also Faroese køva, Norwegian Nynorsk kjøva. Compare the Icelandic form kvæfa, Norwegian Nynorsk kvæva, Icelandic kvefja, obsolete Icelandic kvefja, Norwegian Nynorsk kveva, Swedish kväva (older form kvävja).
