[edit]From Proto-Austronesian *i babaw (“above, on top of”), from Proto-Austronesian *babaw (“upper surface, top; highlands; on, upon, over, above”). By surface analysis, i- + babaw. Cognate with Paiwan vavaw (“up, above”), Kavalan babaw (“upper surface, upper part, top”), Palauan bab (“area/space above, top, surface”), and Maori waho (“outside”). The i- prefix is likely related to the Proto-Austronesian *i (location marker) (cf. ito, ilalim, itaas, ilaya).
