From Proto-Austronesian *i babaw (above, on top of), from Proto-Austronesian *babaw (upper surface, top; highlands; on, upon, over, above). By surface analysis, i- +‎ babaw. Cognate with Paiwan vavaw (up, above), Kavalan babaw (upper surface, upper part, top), Palauan bab (area/space above, top, surface), and Maori waho (outside). The i- prefix is likely related to the Proto-Austronesian *i (location marker) (cf. ito, ilalim, itaas, ilaya).
