[edit]From Middle Dutch hontdage, a calque of Latin diēs caniculārēs (“puppy days”), itself a calque of Ancient Greek κυνάδες ἡμέραι (kunádes hēmérai, “dog days”). Equivalent to hond + -s- + dagen.
