From Middle Welsh gruð, from Proto-Brythonic *grʉð, from Proto-Celtic *groudos (cheek; slope). Cognate with Cornish grudh (jaw, mandible), Irish grua (cheek), Scottish Gaelic gruaidh (cheek).
