gangman (plural gangmen)

  1. (chiefly India and Africa) A member of a work gang; a laborer, often on railways.
    • 1947 September and October, “By Northern Pacific to Seattle”, in Railway Magazine, page 270:
      Heavy snowfalls are prevalent in winter on the higher sections. Three rotary ploughs are stationed on the mountain length, and dozer-ploughs, scrapers, and several hundred extra gangmen are called in to assist when necessary.
