Etymology

Inherited from Old Polish wąsienica. The initial g- is prothetic or by conflation with Proto-Slavic *gušterica (lizard). Compare Bulgarian гъсе́ница (gǎsénica), Czech housenka, Lower Sorbian guseńca, Macedonian гасеница (gasenica), Old Church Slavonic юсеница (jusenica), Russian гу́сеница (gúsenica), Serbo-Croatian gȕsenica, Slovak husenica, Slovene gosẹ̑nica, Ukrainian гу́сениця (húsenycja), and Upper Sorbian husańca.
