[edit]Etymology
[edit]Spread during the 20th century from Low German, Low Franconian, and Central Franconian dialects, from Middle Low German vīs and early modern Dutch vijs, respectively. Compare contemporary Dutch vies (from a dialectal form). Per Pfeifer a connection with Latin spīrō (“I breathe, blow”) is possible.
