[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain; several possibilities exist. Probably ultimately from Latin findere, through an alteration of its past participle fissus into a form *fictus > *fectus, later becoming feminine. (Compare the change from fixus to fitto). An alternative may be a Vulgar Latin *offetta (“little piece”), diminutive of offa. Compare Galician and Portuguese fita, Dalmatian fiata, Sicilian feḍḍa, Sardinian fitta.
