Etymology

From Middle High German drucken, from Old High German drucchen, drukken, from Proto-West Germanic *þrukkijan (to press). Doublet of drücken (to press, push) with Upper German lack of umlaut before a velar geminate; the first German printers were in the south. Established as technical term for printing in the 17th century (see also bedrucken).
