[edit]From Middle High German drucken, from Old High German drucchen, drukken, from Proto-West Germanic *þrukkijan (“to press”). Doublet of drücken (“to press, push”) with Upper German lack of umlaut before a velar geminate; the first German printers were in the south. Established as technical term for printing in the 17th century (see also bedrucken).
