double knit (countable and uncountable, plural double knits)

  1. A knitted fabric consisting of a double thickness, made on a machine with two sets of needles.
    • 1979 December 29, Maida Tilchen, “Polyester Lesbians”, in Gay Community News, volume 7, number 23, page 16:
      The men drive pick-up trucks and wear baseball caps to cover their bald spots. The women drive pick-up trucks and seem more at ease in double-knits than dyke chic.
