From Vulgar Latin cathégra (attested in Pompeiian inscriptions), variant of Latin cathedra (chair), from Ancient Greek καθέδρᾱ (kathédrā, seat). Compare Ligurian carega, Lombard and Piedmontese cadrega, Ladin cariega, Friulian cjadree, Romansch chadregia, Catalan cadira, Spanish cadera. Doublet of càtedra.
