Etymology

From Malay bendahara, from Hindi भंडार (bhaṇḍār), भंडारा (bhaṇḍārā), or another New Indo-Aryan language, with metathesis from earlier *behendara, from Prakrit bhaṁḍāāra, bhaṁḍāgāra, from Sanskrit भाण्डागार (bhāṇḍāgāra, treasury), from भाण्ड (bhāṇḍa) +‎ आगार (āgāra).[1][2] Doublet of bendahara, bendahari, bendara, bendari, bendoro, and bentara.
