From Dutch albast (alabaster), from Latin alabaster (box for perfume made of alabaster), from Ancient Greek ἀλάβαστρος (alábastros), from earlier ἀλάβαστος (alábastos, vase made of alabaster). This may further derive from Egyptian ꜥj-r-bꜣstjt (vessel of the Egyptian goddess Bast).
