[edit]Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from French adresse, from the verb adresser (“to address”), from Latin ad (“to”) and Vulgar Latin *directiāre, from Latin dīrectus (“straight”), the past participle of dīrigo (“to set straight, to direct”).
