Etymology

[edit]

From accūsō (to accuse, blame) +‎ -īvus (verbal adjective suffix). As a grammatical term, it is a mistaken calque of Ancient Greek αἰτῐᾱτῐκή (aitiātikḗ), which does not mean “related to accusing”, but rather “related to an effect”. As a noun, it is an abbreviation of the phrase cāsus accūsātīvus (accusative case), in which the adjective is masculine because it agrees with the masculine noun cāsus.
